Wine Dinners and Tastings

Tony Finn the proprietor of the Worsley Arms is a qualified Master Sommelier and has been involved with wine for over 30 years.
Throught his network of contacts he arranges frequent wine evenings for guests to enjoy. These evenings take many different forms from straight forward tastings to tutored tastings over dinner in the company of the winemaker. Non-wine events can also (occasionally) make an appearance!

The Bordeaux Wine Dinner and Tasting.

'Wherever I wander there's no place like home' If grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon had a theme tune, this would be it, for wherever they put down their roots the resulting wine will be compared and judged against those of Bordeaux, forever the benchmark for these popular varieties.

To accompany dinner I have selected some cracking wines that not only compliment the menu but also illustrate the individual character of their respective communes. We will taste from the left bank (Cabernet dominated) and the right bank (Merlot dominated) as well as some dry white and a delicious sweet wine to round the evening off.

Smoked fillet of Dexter beef, wagyu fat roasted Gypsy potatoes, black olive tapenade, nasturtium puree, 18 month aged Parmesan, smoked oil, ox tongue

If you have not been to one of our wine evenings before, you are in for a treat! The format is simple, we will meet in the lounge at 7pm for a welcoming glass of wine before moving through to the dining room for dinner at 8pm. Each wine will be introduced and there will be the opportunity for discussion, but nothing too serious.

An Inspector Calls ..... The Chef and the Sommelier Wine Dinner.

We are delighted to announce that following our recent inspection by The AA in April we have been awarded Two Rosettes, a big feather in the cap for Chef Andrew Jones.

What the inspector said 'In terms of cuisine, a most impressive offering, a comfortable recommendation at Two Rosettes, noteworthy to mention the exceptional aspects of cookery, ingredient provenance, & the excelled wine offering'

To celebrate this accolade we will be holding this special dinner, Andrew will prepare the menu enjoyed by the inspector and Tony will serve the recommended wines, you can judge for yourself!

Wine Dinner: Thursday 23rd March 2017

Over the years we have welcomed wine makers from many regions, some that trip off the tongue, others more obscure, but never in 17 years at Hovingham or in 30 years of organising wine events have WE hosted an evening dedicated to the wines of Uruguay, the fourth biggest producer in South America.

Our guest will be Diego Perez, brand ambassador for leading producer Establecimiento Juanico. They have over 500 acres of vineyards cultivated under strict sustainable practices. During his long involvement with Uruguayan wine, Diego launched the first online wine store in Uruguay and developed an in depth knowledge of the vineyards, the wine makers and their individual styles.

He will be presenting a selection of wines made from familiar varieties including some stunning Tannat, a vine that is seen as the poor relation in many regions but has flourished in Uruguay.

'The Wineless Dinner', Thursday 10th August 2016

We recently had a visit from Nick Stafford one of the finest independent brewers around. Based just outside Thirsk, Nick has been supplying beer to the hotel for over 20 years.

He visited the day after a Supper Club and when he saw the menu our discussion moved on to the art of matching food and wine, and why not beer? He asked, I had no answer, so the idea was born!

For this special dinner we will be matching each course with one of Nick's hand crafted ales, from a range he specially created to accompany food.

To keep to the 'wineless' theme, we will be starting the evening with a tasting featuring 'Masons Yorkshire Gin'.

This special evening will allow an insight into the mysterious worlds of brewing and distilling in the company of two of our regions finest exponents.

We shall meet in the lounge (or garden if the weather permits) at 7pm with a view to sitting for dinner at 7.45pm.

The price for this will be £35 per person.
